Basel
Situated close to both French and German borders, Basel offers easy access to some smaller resorts like Wengen (33 pistes) and Engelberg (28 pistes). For more extensive action, the 320km, 110-piste offering in Davos – within a two-and-a-half hour drive of Basel/Mulhouse International Airport – is one of the highest rated ski destinations for intermediate and expert skiers and snowboarders.
Opodo tip: Off the slopes, plenty of cultural attractions and art museums can be found within Basel’s medieval city centre.
Geneva
Geneva is one of Europe’s top ski gateways with over 150 resorts less than a three-hour drive of Geneva Cointrin International Airport. This historical and international city spreads westward toward France and the Alps where some of Europe’s best snow locations can be found in Verbier (with over 412 km of downhill skiing), Zermatt (with 395 km of downhill skiing) and Chamonix (with 143 pistes).
Opodo tip: Many of the ski resorts near Geneva are at an altitude of 2500m or more, promising a long season of snow.
Zurich
Zurich is the gateway to some of the biggest ski resorts in central Europe, including Klosters (307km of downhill skiing) and Films Laax (220km over 58 pistes) in Switzerland, and Lech, just over the border in Austria (with 180 pistes). These resorts – and about 35 more – are all located within about a two-hour drive of Zurich Airport. Within three hours, you’ve got access to about 80 in total.
Opodo tip: Zurich has good rail links to many of the ski resorts, so you can stay in the city and day-trip to the slopes.
