TAP (originally Transportes A'reos Portugueses) was founded in 1945, and rolled out routes that serviced Madrid, Portuguese Africa, London and the island of S'o Tom'.
After the airline became a private company in the 1950s, TAP expanded its network significantly and now operates flights to 50 destinations throughout 25 countries across Europe, Africa, North, Central and South America.
In 1979, TAP's official name became TAP Air Portugal, only to become TAP Portugal in 2005. Later that year, TAP Portugal became the sixth member of the Star Alliance.
